The Foundation. With more than 25 years of combined experience, we’re an international recruitment firm built for the kind of work where market context, cultural understanding, and strategic judgment matter as much as sourcing ability. SlaterConsult was founded in Denmark in 2015 by Maiken Slater Johannsen.

Year One. Within the first year, we were receiving inquiries from companies who needed help hiring their first leadership presence in the United States – businesses expanding into unfamiliar markets where they had no presence, no networks, and no direct understanding of how talent markets operated there.

Building from scratch. That need led us to establish SlaterConsult in North Carolina, building US operations from scratch. We navigated everything our clients now face: establishing credibility in a market where no one knows you, understanding compensation norms that don’t translate directly across borders, making hiring decisions with limited local context, and learning firsthand how differently business operates when you cross into a new market.

Today. That experience is not incidental to what we do. It’s the foundation of it. Today, SlaterConsult is led by a team of women who have built and run international businesses themselves. With operations covering Europe, North and South America, we bring something most firms can’t offer, not just knowledge of the markets, but the operational experience of having built within them.

When a Danish energy company needs to hire their first VP of Sales in North America, or a European defense contractor is building a team in a new market, we understand what’s actually at stake. Not theoretically. From having been there ourselves.

These three principles have shaped how we work from the beginning. They reflect a simple belief: good decisions start with understanding the situation, knowing where you’re going, and being willing to do what it takes to get there.

We start by understanding what’s actually happening, the market, the organization, the people involved, and the realities surrounding the decision. We ask questions, look at the right information, and make sure we’re solving the right problem before recommending a path forward.

Insight only matters if it leads somewhere. We turn what we’ve learned into a clear course of action, grounded in the realities of the business and the market rather than assumptions about how things should work.

Then we stay involved. Whether we’re helping make a critical hire, strengthen a team, or work through an organizational challenge, we work alongside our clients to put that direction into practice and adjust when the situation calls for it.
